The Gospel Whiskey is a Melbourne born distillery dedicated to creating a distinctly Australian expression of rye whiskey.
Inspired by traditional American rye and driven by a belief that Australian grain and climate could produce something unique, The Gospel uses locally grown rye and Melbourne’s dynamic conditions to shape its whiskey. The brand combines established distilling techniques with a hands on approach, producing whiskey that reflects both the heritage of rye and its Australian origins.
The Gospel Whiskey was founded by Ben Bowles and Andrew Fitzgerald.
Bowles grew up in South Carolina and began learning the craft of distilling from a young age, while Fitzgerald developed a strong interest in American whiskey, distilling and the culture surrounding it. The pair previously established Melbourne Moonshine before turning their attention to rye whiskey and building The Gospel.
The Gospel Whiskey was born in Brunswick in Melbourne’s inner north, where Ben Bowles and Andrew Fitzgerald designed and built the distillery. Its rye grain is sourced from the Murray Mallee region of Australia, while the whiskey itself is distilled and bottled in Melbourne. The company traces its rye development back to experiments following the launch of Melbourne Moonshine in 2016. The Gospel was subsequently established as a dedicated rye whiskey distillery in 2019.
